Running

I've done 10 half marathons now!  Looking for one to do in 2020.

I taught a Run For God class at our church in 2019 and had a great time with it.

Still running and continuing my 90/30 intervals (Jeff Galloway method of doing run/walk/run)
February 2017.  Since I'm up to ten miles, I need to find a half marathon to do this spring.

Have continued with my running.  Great exercise even as slow as I am.  Was happy to meet up with my brother at my fall 2016 half marathon.  He has lost about 80 pounds and did his first 5k.

15k training...8 slow miles...the day after my 57th birthday.  So thankful I can still do this.

I did my fourth Half Marathon this morning, November 21, 2015, the Secret City Half Marathon in Oak Ridge.  I PR'd!  I finished a little over three minutes faster than the Foothills Half I did three weeks ago.  My knees are killing me but I am still very happy!  Unofficial Garmin time was 2:37:58.

Another long run. 9 miles on the treadmill. I'm beginning really like the "dread" mill as some runners call it. The ice pack on the knee is just some preventative maintenance.

Long run today on my half marathon training. 7 miles.  Today was also the virtual Boobie Run sponsored by Skirt Sports.  Since I am an ambassador I did my part.  I was supposed to run either an 8k or 8 miles.  I counted my 7 as the 8k (~5 miles).

Ran my first 15k race in Nashville on February 14th, 2015. Cold but fun and I blasted my goal!

Started 2015 off right with the Calhoun's New Years Day 5k. Garmin time for the 3.34 miles (notice that is more than a 3.1 5k) is below. I'll take it. Fastest I've run a race in over a year. No injuries, no soreness. Yay!

This race was The Chase, with funds going towards Sudden Infant Death syndrome in memory of Chase Ruffner.

Took first in my age group, but honestly I don't think there were any others in my age group!

Two of my co-workers and friends running the fourth of July Run For God in Sweetwater 7/4/2014.

May 17, 2014, Secret City 5k for Haiti medical missions. Knee still bothering me some but I did take second in my age group. It is kind of nice moving up an age group, not as much competition today.

Update: April 26, 2014. I've run two half marathons, the Covenant Health in Knoxville, and the Kentucky Derby in Louisville. Both were a ton of fun. This pic is from the Kentucky derby half. I think I am saying, "oh boy, the finish line! My knee is killing me!!"

This was with my co-worker and friend at our first half marathon - the Knoxville Covenant 2014.

01/18/2014 I am continuing my half marathon training. Due to some arthritis hip pain I decided to try Jeff Galloway's interval method for my long run today. I followed the 4 minute run/1 minute walk intervals and it was a great run. I started out very, very slow, but got faster as I went along without really even trying. No new aches and pains.

It was pretty cold, with a feels like of about 25. I wore my north face cold gear tights, which are awesome, two shirts and a jacket but the jacket came off around the first mile.

01/01/2014 - started the year off right with a 5k race. Set a new PR of 32:33, average pace 10:22.

December 20, 2013 - my longest distance in my half marathon training, 7 miles! Normally I work on pace on the shorter routes and just try to cover the distance without trying to improve my pace on the long run days. Today, I was pleased that I was able to cover the distance and my pace improved.
My first 10k! - the Hot to Trot Thanksgiving day 10k at Turkey Creek in Knoxville

Friday's long run (November 15, 2013):
I met a runner/quilter friend this morning for our long run. Six miles! We did it. We are both registered for a local Thanksgiving day 10K. I think we are ready. It was a very nice comfortable run.

The temperature was right....

Friday, October 15, 2013

although I was still probably a bit overdressed...
...in my Champion running leggings, long sleeve tech shirt under a longer length short sleeve tech shirt.....after the first mile I was wishing I had on shorts and only one layer of shirts...(I'm obviously not very good at 'selfie' pictures...ha)
Yep....5 miles! Yippee! My overall pace wasn't too bad either at 11:32 min/mi. To me the first three miles are the hardest and there's not much difference between running four and five.....well, at least today that is what it felt like. Just a great run. Loved it. Now I am doing a little preventive maintenance with ice on my left ankle and left hip....and enjoying the endorphin rush.

5k Race Results - October 19, 2013

Before.....
At the finish line....
And after....
First place in my age group, yay! of course it helps that there were only two of us in my age group! Not my best time, but not too bad for a newbie at 54 years old. 35:56 minutes, I'll take it and be happy I can run!

July 21, 2013
I love running. There are so many benefits - from weight loss, improved bone density, decreased resting heart rate, muscle tone. Yes, some days it is hard. I mean really hard. Afterwards, though, you feel awesome. Like you've really done something. I often say it is a lot like childbirth. When you are in it, it feels like it will never end, and it is tough. Afterwards, all you feel is good. Some of my latest stats are below.
7/20/13 3 miles, 34:11, 11:14 min/mi
7/17/13 3 miles, 32:13, 10:44 min/mi
7/15/13 4 miles, 44:22, 11:05 min/mi
7/13/13 4 miles, 44:47, 11:11 min/mi
7/10/13 4 miles, 45:17, 11:19 min/mi
7/08/13 3.5 miles, 40:18, 11:30 min/mi
April 13, 2013Thought I'd post an update on my running. I did finish the Ease into 5K app and I made it all the way through with no problems. I could run for 30 minutes straight at the end of seven weeks. It is an 8 week plan but there were a few times early on when I did two days in a row, even though that is not recommended. After I did three thirty minute runs I decided to use another free app called RunHelper. You set the distance and it tracks your pace per mile, overall pace, time and distance. I put in 3.1 miles, knowing it would take me longer than 30 minutes. I did it, but it about killed me. After a couple of runs with times around 37:45, I decided to change my strategy. I allowed myself a couple of short walk breaks. The first time I did it, my time was about 36 minutes. The last time it was 33:47. Amazing that those walk breaks enabled me to finish significantly faster than trying to run it all without stopping.
This page is dedicated to my latest obsession hobby, running. I started in February 2013 with the couch-to-5k app on the iphone. Soon I moved to the upgraded app called Ease into 5k. It helps you maintain an 8 week schedule that uses interval training of walking and running to very gradually get you to where you can run for thirty minutes straight, about a 5k distance or 3.1 miles. The app tracks your distance (when your GPS is turned on), your walking and running pace, calories burned, duration, even maps your route. You can listen to your own playlist while it is in use and it will pause the music to tell you when to run and when to walk. You can set it for reminders, such as half way finished, or at so many minutes during your run. It even has a journal option for you to record your thoughts on your training session. It is fabulous. $2.99 from the app store.
Another thing this app does is let you share to your social media through either twitter or facebook. Stay tuned for my progress.
